People with broadband access at home may be more likely to shop for goods online, a new report has indicated.

Findings by Verdict Research highlight an increase in online spending by more than one third during 2006 to £10.9 billion.

The firm forecasts that sales over the internet are set to treble during the next five years, but retailers need to do more to fill consumers with confidence to prompt an online shopping boom.

"As shoppers spend increasing sums online they need greater assurance that their financial details are safe, particularly in light of the growing number of phishing scams, where customers have in error divulged personal financial information to third parties," the report states.

By 2011, the amount made from online shopping is predicted to reach £28 billion because of the broadband explosion, the firm believes.

Shoppers are expected to spend a total £1,056 online by 2011, compared with the £606 they each spent last year.
