The affordability and popularity of broadband services will continue to influence the availability of high quality, on-demand home video entertainment, it has been advised.
According to a spokesman for Techwatch.co.uk, the internet is in a strong position to overtake traditional television as one of the main providers of programming if it can overcome some of the barriers it has faced in the past.
Brian Turner, executive editor of the company - an independent online publication which offers news and views on digital television and internet-based content - said current growth trends are a sign of the power and flexibility of broadband as a medium for broadcasting.
He added the convergence of traditional media platforms and formats with the web is something that has been in the pipeline for some time - but was now reaching a point where the required technology and broadband speeds were able to support it.
"Nowadays, [internet protocol television] services are becoming much more mainstream and home video entertainment systems repeatedly try and leverage the internet for a wider service offering," Mr Turner explained.
It was noted that previous attempts to provide streaming services - like Karoo and Microsoft's XP Media Centre - had been less successful, but were ultimately responsible in shaping the form as we know it today.
According to a recent Microsoft report entitled Europe Logs On: Internet Trends of Today & Tomorrow, current growth suggest the web will overtake the traditional television platform as most people's main source of content by June 2010.
