Broadband uptake "still strong"

(Tuesday, 5th June 2007)

Despite having slowed, broadband uptake in the UK has continued to remain strong, a study has shown.

According to research by telecoms consultancy Enders Analysis, the number of new broadband connections for the year to the end of March fell to 2,995,000.

"Growth is still strong, but there is clear evidence that market growth is slowing," said Enders analyst Ian Watt.

An earlier boom saw the number of subscribers rise in 2004, with almost half of all UK households having broadband access by the beginning of 2006 – up from 15 per cent at the beginning of 2004.

However, there is still room for further growth as about 4.8 million households have PCs but have not yet invested in broadband.

A recent study by BT found that Scotland was at the forefront of broadband uptake, with more than half of households and firms across the nation's north-east and the Shetland Islands having access to high-speed internet connections.
