Broadband users could prefer Internet Explorer

Broadband customers may be among the majority of people who will continue to browse the web with Internet Explorer for as long as Windows remains the most popular operating system, according to Techworld.

Although Windows will continue to lose market share to rivals such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari, its position as the number one browser is safe until web viewers "in their current form are no longer what matters", the IT news website states.

Google Chrome recently overtook Apple Safari as the third most popular browser - which could be a result of the choices made by the UK's increasing number of broadband users.

John Dunn, associate editor at Techworld, says: "Browsers are best seen as an intermediate stage on the road to a world of far more featured mobile devices. Windows is under severe threat in this space and I doubt the market share of Internet Explorer will make much difference."

With a sharp rise in the number of people accessing broadband connections through a mobile device and predictions that usage will grow significantly in the next decade, Windows' position could be under threat unless it develops its mobile-based systems.

In December Internet Explorer led the way in the web browser sector with a market share of 62.69 per cent, with its nearest rival - Firefox - taking 24.61 per cent.

Google Chrome rose to 4.63 per cent, ahead of Apple Safari which registered a 4.46 per cent share.

The European Commission recently accepted plans by Microsoft to increase competition in the web browser market, largely by allowing computer manufacturers to install rival systems during the production process.
