Broadband users fed up of online advertising

Wednesday 23rd July 2008, by Daniel King

A new survey has revealed the extent to which broadband users are irritated by pop-up advertising.

According to an Opinion Matters online poll, 84 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds have left their favourite sites when advertising becomes intrusive.

Moreover, 70 per cent of the same age group have stopped visiting a website altogether because of irrelevant or invasive advertising.

Noisy ads, pop-ups and adverts that are difficult to close or minimise are the worst offenders.

Commenting on the findings, Peter Mitchell of WWAV Rapp Collins Media Group, said advertisers and website technicians need to have a rethink

"The industry must re-examine what the web does best and create content that is relevant and entertaining," he stated.

Earlier this year, the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group published a set of guidelines on how internet service providers can help reduce the levels of spam.
