Broadband users 'getting savvy with online research'

Thursday 21st May 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband users are flocking to the internet to save money on their purchases and this is something retailers will continue to take full advantage of, according to one industry commentator.

A spokesman for Internet Retailer, an online publication which reports on the latest developments in the world of shopping technology trends and e-retailing, said there was little to suggest the sector had suffered too badly so far from the current state of the global economy.

Don Davis, editor of the site, said although some have said the worst may be over for the e-commerce sector, it was clear that such stores had not had anywhere near the kind of difficulties that high street stores had experienced lately.

He added that online sales were gradually picking up and confidence was growing as many web users were finding that the internet is a place they can turn to - which could end up making it an even bigger part of the retailing sector.

"Retail chains and consumer goods manufacturers have seen during the recession how consumers use the web to research," he explained.

"Plus, there will be fewer bricks-and-mortar stores, making the web a more convenient choice for many consumers."

Figures from comScore's recent 2009 first quarter e-commerce sales report estimated online spending in the US had remained at the same level as it had this time last year.

However, the group's chairman Gian Fulgoni said figures were slightly better than what had been a "disappointing" fourth quarter in 2008.
