Broadband users 'make the world smaller with social networking'

With more people accessing websites like Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and Twitter, one expert has suggested the world could be seen as getting smaller when it comes to travel.

A spokesman for online holiday resource Expedia.co.uk said this week that social networking is having a positive effect on how broadband users are viewing their vacation options.

Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at the site, said people are getting online in their droves thanks to the communication phenomena - and are visiting the accounts of friends and family to check out images and reviews of the destinations they have visited.

He added this was making consumers more adventurous about the places they want to travel to and could be more likely to get them to visit a country positioned "out of their comfort zone".

"[Social networking] gives you more information to make decisions about where [you] want to go. It supplements other sources of information such as television programmes which have always been very good at trying to encourage people," Mr Cudworth explained.

The comments follow a recent study conducted by rival firm lastminute.com, which revealed around 42 per cent of younger broadband users were updating their mini blogs on Twitter and amending their Facebook accounts at times when they should be relaxing.

It was also noted that 47 per cent of respondents admitted to wasting holiday time by doing nothing at all, visiting the office or checking emails using their mobile phones.

Facebook has its own downloadable application which is compatible with the most recent Apple iPhone.
