BT has confirmed that it is to carry out improvements to the telecommunications network in the Orkney Isles.
The organisation will lay a new fibre optic submarine cable between the islands and the Scottish mainland in order to bring its systems into the 21st century.
This will enable people in the region to take full advantage of all the services currently offered by BT to those on the mainland.
Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, commented: "Everyone will enjoy a better overall experience - from ordering a service to paying the bill."
He added that the new systems will benefit everyone who uses BT systems, including service providers, small businesses or individual consumers.
Meanwhile, the Scottish government has confirmed that people in the most remote parts of Scotland will soon get access to broadband internet.
Commenting on the move, enterprise minister Jim Mather said high-speed internet connections are now seen as a standard utility by many households.
