BT announces towns for superfast broadband drive
Wednesday 31st March 2010, by Daniel King
BT has announced details of the biggest phase of its superfast broadband roll-out project, with hundreds of thousands of homes across the country set to benefit.
According to the internet service provider (ISP), it will update exchanges in the south-east, south-west, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Greater Manchester, north-west and Wales, bringing fibre-based internet to huge numbers of people.
"Four million premises will have been connected by the end of 2010 in the largest single commercial investment in fibre-based broadband ever undertaken in the UK," the firm stated.
And when it says superfast, it means it.
Users will be able to get download speeds of between 40Mb/s and 60Mb/s and according to BT, these will be more than enough for families using up loads of bandwidth by streaming high-definition films, downloading music and gaming at the same time.
Sounds good to me.
But it's not just households that will benefit.
Importantly - especially as the economy is still trying to shake off the recession - it is businesses that could be big winners thanks to the roll-out.
More UK enterprises will be able to take advantage of sophisticated cloud computing technology, videoconferencing software, better computer processing and faster back-up of computer systems, BT added.
Commenting on the announcement, Steve Robertson, chief executive of Openreach - the division of the telecoms group responsible for the roll-out, said: "We are proud to be at the forefront of deploying fibre in the UK and because, unlike other companies, we're making it available to all communications providers, people will have a choice of fibre broadband supplier."
