BT announces wireless milestone

Wednesday 19th August 2009, by Daniel King

BT has announced another milestone in its bid to offer more wireless broadband support facilities across the length and breadth of the nation.

The network and telecommunications company said this week that it had now been able to set up 500,000 such hotspots in the UK and Ireland, giving portable device users a larger choice of Wi-Fi points to use than any other provider.

It was noted the figure represented a halfway mark that would be doubled to a full one million broadband internet locations by the end of 2009, with high-speed public access now an important option for businesses and consumers alike.

Among the sites featuring BT's FON Wi-Fi Community, Openzone and wireless city centres systems are Hilton, Thistle and Ramada Jarvis hotels, as well as Caffe Nero and Starbucks coffee stores. Those stopping at Welcome Break or Roadchef Costa stations may also take advantage of the company's network, as can visitors to British Airways, Flybe and Skyteam airport lounges.

"We've reached a significant milestone in making Wi-Fi available in places where people want to get online. As the UK's largest broadband retailer, we're happy to offer the biggest Wi-Fi network too, said Gavin Patterson, chief executive officer of the carrier's retail division.

"We'll continue to expand from here," he added.

This week the group announced it would be offering a free booster package to its subscribers worth £15 that could improve their internet speeds significantly. The BT Broadband Accelerator can be ordered online and comes with a guide that the firm said could help achieve up to 20 Mbps.
