BT broadband users get new way to shop

Tuesday 22nd September 2009, by Daniel King

A new shopping facility has been launched by BT which could tempt those in the market for a bundled television, broadband and phone package or consumers looking to switch their service provider.

The telecommunications group unveiled the launch of a new 24-hour retail channel that will be titled Vision Shopping and is available via its digital set-top box system.

Subscribers to the BT Vision service will see the options introduced across five different product categories, allowing then to choose between The Home, Sport and Fitness, Beauty and Baby, DIY and The Kitchen.

Individual programmes can be selected and rewatched as many times as the viewer requires and the catalogue of available products will be refreshed wherever possible - meaning new items will frequently be on offer.

The on-demand shopping channel service will be hosted by former Big Breakfast host and Children in Need regular Gaby Roslin and is put together by Canis Media, which produced content for the channel alongside BT Vision.

Marc Watson, chief executive officer of the latter organisation, explained that the idea behind the project was to offer people an easy way to engage with their television to get the best products "from the comfort of their sofa".

"Our customers can browse each vision shopping department for a selection of great offers and clever gift ideas. All customers have to do is select the department that they want to explore," he added.

In addition, Canis Media spokesman Ed Hall said the new service, which is available on channel 960, could be "just the beginning".

BT Vision recently added the Bolly and Beyond on-demand option to its content catalogue.
