BT to 'accelerate' 40% of the UK

Monday 17th August 2009, by Daniel King

BT has announced the details of a new service it will be offering to its new and existing broadband customers that is designed to provide them with the best possible speeds.

The company announced the launch of a new booster pack that it will make available to users in areas where it believes connections can be improved, predicting that for some this could mean anything up to 20 Mb/s.

Named the BT Broadband Accelerator, the system is said to be worth £15 but will be given free to customers who order it online, although a postage fee of £1.20 will be incurred.

The first part of the kit is a small plate that slots easily into telephone sockets that are not in use to cut down on electrical interference and potentially increase internet speeds by up to 1.5 Mb.

A "comprehensive" guide is also included that offers ten individual steps people can go through in order to maximise their connection, which could also see upload speeds boosted to somewhere between 448 Kb/s and 1 Mb.

Under the scheme, BT has claimed 549 UK exchanges will be able to support the improvements, meaning as many as 40 per cent of the nation's homes and businesses could benefit. This level of coverage is expected to rise to 55 per cent by next March.

John Petter, managing director of BT’s Consumer division, said: "The BT Broadband Accelerator can make a big difference."

"Between that and us more than doubling headline speeds for millions of homes and businesses, most customers should start to see a rapid boost in the performance of their connection," he added.

BT is currently offering three months free on new high-speed internet packages.
