BT 'will have to pull out all the stops' in 2009

BT will have to "pull out all the stops" to retain its subscriber base in the face of increased competition from rival providers.
According to Thomas Newton of Broadband Finder, the UK's broadband market leader will have to up its game in order to remain on top this year.
The firm recently announced a new deal offering all customers who sign up to its broadband packages a free wireless router.
Those who switch to any of BT's Total Broadband options will receive the BT Home Hub without charge, as well as having £20 knocked off their bill.
Mr Newton said the offer could provide a good deal for those looking to hook up to a broadband connection, with the original Home Hub proving "a runaway success" for BT.
"Including the new BT Home Hub 2.0 - which originally cost £90 when it was first released - free on all BT Broadband packages will undoubtedly be a hit with customers looking to cut back the costs in these difficult times," he commented.
But despite experiencing a good year in 2008, BT will be faced with sterner competition over the next 12 months as rival firms now offer improved deals.
With Virgin Media's new 50Mbps broadband up and running and Be Broadband yielding positive results from its trial of double-bonded ADSL2+, BT would be forced to improve its offerings over the next 12 months, Mr Newton claimed.
BT recently announced plans to include 0870 and 0845 numbers into its Evenings and Weekends and Anytime phone plans in a bid to help cut costs for its customers.
