Campaign for a 'Networked Nation' launched

Can you imagine what your life would be like now without a broadband internet connection?

You'd have to take a trip to the library to settle a debate, rather than just "Googling" the answer to a friend's query.

Also you wouldn't be able to shop, book holidays or access hour upon hour of entertainment from the comfort of your own home.

Well believe it or not ten million people in the UK have never been on the internet, not even once.

It is these people that are the subject of a new campaign to make Britain a "Networked Nation".

Martha Lane Fox, the government's digital champion, has announced the launch of Race Online 2012, which aims to get millions more people online by the end of the Olympics in London.

This could mean a number of people start to hunt for the best broadband bargains to ensure their internet experience is light on their pockets.

Ms Fox commented: "The ten million people in the UK who have never been online are already missing out on big consumer savings, access to information and education.

"They will be even more isolated and disadvantaged as government and industry expands ever faster into digital-only services. We must change our mindset from one that shields people from using the internet to one that helps empower them to get online and enjoy all the benefits."

The expert said the campaign is a "rallying cry" for people and organisations to "inspire, encourage and support" people to get online and reap the benefits of internet access.
