Concerns over legal ISP music downloads

Concerns over legal ISP music downloads Plans announced by some internet service providers (ISP) to launch music deals combined with broadband packages have been criticised by an online music store.

Online shop eMusic stated that existing download sites may find that they suffer as a result of the deals and voiced concerns that greater bandwidth may be allowed to ISP's own sites, reports the Financial Times.

David Pakman, chief executive of eMusic, told the newspaper: "Our concern is that in order to obtain the co-operation of the ISPs, there seems to be a quid pro quo."

"This is qualitatively different from licensing another half a dozen digital music businesses."

He added that the schemes could end up "penalising the good guys".

However, Sky Broadband and BT have both refuted the claims stating that the concerns are premature as no products have yet been released and there are no plans to slow down broadband access to other services.

BT claims that its new Home Hub will provide users with twice the wireless range of any other broadband provider in the UK.
