Consumers advised on cyber crime

One expert has advised consumers and web users to be extra vigilant as tough economic times could lead to some people committing acts of cyber crime.

A spokesman for Unisys, an international company which specialises in a host of information technology solutions, said even people who you may think are not capable of such deeds could be tempted as the recession continues.

Neil Fisher, vice-president of global security at the company, said there was a greater risk from online crime as a result of the recession and, as such, people in the UK should be making sure they have the right security in place.

He warned broadband users would feel more vulnerable to crimes like identity theft if they are made to feel as if firms are cutting their budgets for due diligence and consumer protection.

"It's worth noting that the escalating trend in online crime is also echoed in the US, Germany and Spain where rising financial security scores are the greatest security concern for consumers, demonstrating that the UK is not unique," Mr Fisher added.

The company recently published the latest version of its biannual Unisys Security Index, which revealed 72 per cent people in the UK thought they were at greater risk from cyber crime as a result of the economic slowdown.

It was also noted that 88 per cent of respondents admitted they were concerned about others being able to access their credit cards, debit cards or bank accounts.

The comments could inspire some to opt for a broadband provider that offers them free web security software or online story.
