Convergence 'is starting to happen'

Matthew Key has spoken to the Guardian about the growing importance of convergence, which could transform the residential broadband market.
As head of Telefonica O2 Europe, Mr Key is known for securing the deal between O2 and Apple over the iPhone but in the newspaper he focuses on the future of broadband provision from mobile phone companies.
Convergence will mean that customers can use one device for their mobile and home phone, as well as using broadband from the same supplier.
Mr Key explained: "Looking forward, convergence around one device is starting to happen," adding that other technology could also be used in conjunction with broadband.
He also discussed O2's development of femtocells which can be used with mobile phones, to alert parents when children are home by detecting their mobile phone signals.
O2 launched its broadband service in October 2007, with the aim of offering "total transparency in both pricing and service speeds".
