Cost cutting with the web 'is easy'

Broadband services could be an effective way for small businesses and entrepreneurs to cut costs and boost their advertising prospects, one expert has suggested.

According to a spokesman for the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), an organisation that trains, develops and represents those in the sector, said technology was a useful ally to have in times of economic uncertainty.

Thomas Brown, research projects manager at the group, said there were a number of innovative ways to reduce spending and boost revenues and many of these involve interaction with the internet.

"It is very easy, as it is with cutting your prices, to simply shift all your communications online and save a lot of money," he explained.

However, he added there were some things to consider before investing in any new technologies and researching what is available to a company, how much it will cost and how effective it will be are important points to keep in mind.

"Be sensitive to the amount of ecommunications people receive and don't be cavalier when it comes to data protection and privacy communication," Mr Brown warned, concluding it is essential for businesses to "be ethical".

A recent CIM white paper entitled Marketing in a Recession offered a number of guidelines on how companies can effectively boost their prospects in a period of recession.

The report suggested finding out how buying behaviour changes during a downturn and adapt strategies to account for this.

Another tip which businesses and home broadband users could consider is shopping around online to see if the internet package they have is the cheapest around for their requirements.
