Domain names 'bought for life'

Thursday 28th February 2008, by Daniel King

The demand for domain names has been kept buoyant because they can be retained for a lifetime, even when users switch providers, according to Domainmonster.com.

Business broadband users may be particularly interested in the reminder from the domain registration provider that renewing a website name can ensure it remains in the hands of the company, although the same applies for personal websites.

Managing director of Domainmonster.com Matt Mansell commented: "[A] domain name doesn't have to move with the service provider, it's held by a central body and as long as you renew it online it remains yours for as long as you'd like."

This information could affect those with a website who are considering switching broadband providers and wish to retain their domain name in what Mr Mansell describes as an "ever-changing market".

Broadband and other internet users in the Asia Pacific region came under scrutiny this week after the introduction of the website suffix ".asia" received 266,663 applications within 24 hours.
