Broadband users will not be able to use the Netscape Navigator after February 1st 2008, when owner AOL will cease supporting it.

The browser is now used by 0.6 per cent of web users, whereas at its peak Netscape had a 90 per cent market share.

Writing in his blog, lead developer Tom Drapeau advised Netscape users: "The Netscape team fully stands behind the fine work being done by the Mozilla Foundation. We recommend that you download Mozilla Firefox and give it a try. We know you'll enjoy it".

AOL took over Netscape in 1998, when its reduced popularity led to widespread redundancies resulting in many of the staff transferring to the Mozilla Foundation to work on Firefox.

The latest figures from analytics firm Net Applications suggest that Firefox gained 2.5 per cent of the market share in 2007, although Microsoft's Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser.
