European internet TV receives funding
Broadband users could be affected by moves by the European Union to invest in internet television, in a project which will standardise how TV is delivered through the internet.
The research project will be called P2P Next and will also be partially funded by partners in including the broadcasting corporation, reports the BBC.
Speaking on behalf of the VTT technical research centre in Finland, Jari Ahola explained why broadcasters were willing to invest in the scheme.
"They can use the internet as a distribution platform for very low cost," said Mr Ahola, adding that the project could offer an alternative to terrestrial, satellite and cable.
P2P next has already received a grant of 14 million from the European Union after a meeting of the conglomerate in Brussels earlier this month.
It is hoped that the technology will initially work alongside what is currently available but eventually broadband users may find that the new P2P Next developments overtake the current alternatives, according to the project objectives.
