Expert looks at switching options

There are a number of ways in which broadband users could be saving money on their internet connections and an article this week has looked at how switching providers might be a smart move for some.

In a piece for the Daily Mail, Justin Harper considered some of the best deals that are currently available and what consumers can expect from these services should they decide to make the change.

First of all, he recommended taking into account exactly how much usage the household would need from a broadband package and weighing this up against the price of the top high-speed offerings on the market.

Mr Harper went on to suggest taking onboard a series of points when adopting this approach, such as what the service will be used for, how many hours per month it will be utilised and whether or not music and video downloads are likely to come into the equation.

He noted providers will base prices on usage, with BT's Option 1 service offering up to 10 GB of downloads each month for £15.65, but exceeding this limit would incur £1 per extra GB charge.

"Others advertise unlimited downloads, but you'll generally pay more for these -so don't buy what you don't need," he added. "Many operate a fair usage policy which means if you download excessively, your service could be suspended."

In conclusion, bundled services that also include digital TV and landline phone options were noted as a worthwhile consideration as this can save money and provide "the added convenience of having all your bills from one supplier".

BT also offers a television option with its broadband named Vision.
