Facebook changes 'could emulate Twitter'

Monday 27th April 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband users could see changes to one of the internet's most popular social networking site that will make it more like one of its emerging rivals, it has been suggested.

In an article for the Econsultancy blog, Patricio Robles discussed reports that Facebook is once again about to make some strategic changes that will put it more in line with Twitter.

Citing the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), it is argued plans to make Facebook a more "open" communicative channel, with greater access to the photos, videos, notes and comments people upload reflects a clear desire by its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to emulate the micro-blogging site.

The WSJ piece explained third-party developers would have access to a range of data as part of the transformation - allowing them the opportunity to create new services for users, provided they have the account holder's permission to do so.

Mr Robles continued by saying from a privacy point of view this was "a good thing", but questioned how effective it would make the applications themselves.

"The question is whether enough users will be willing to open up more of their data to applications - and whether they'll be willing to do so with applications that go beyond the novelty category," he added.

In other news, former Facebook chief revenue officer Owen Van Natta was recently unveiled as the new boss of MySpace. Commenting on the appointment, Mr Van Natta said he looked forward to "piloting MySpace in what is sure to be an incredibly exciting and rewarding next chapter for the business".
