Facebook 'is most popular site for mobile broadband users'

More than a quarter of people in the UK are now using mobile broadband connections each month, according to new figures.

The research by GSMA Mobile Media Metrics also reveals that accessing Facebook is the most popular reason to do so amongst browsing Britons.

Facebook had 2.6 billion page impressions during December - which was almost three times as many as Google and approximately a third of the overall total.

Other pages to make the top ten in terms of popularity include those offered by Orange, Apple and the BBC.

Of the 16 million people to use mobile broadband during the month, five million logged on to Facebook and 4.5 million accessed Google, the report by GSMA shows.

Indeed, almost half of the total minutes people were connected to mobile internet for were spent on Facebook during the period in question.

It is believed that the surge in demand for smartphones - which has resulted in more than a fifth of the UK's mobile subscribers buying models such as the iPhone or Nexus One - is behind the increasing popularity of mobile broadband.

The inclusion of the BBC in the top ten most visited sites may suggest that keeping up with the news on the go has become a priority for mobile broadband customers.

Another activity which has recently been cited as a popular one for mobile broadband users is watching videos online.

Motorola has suggested that 87 per cent of people now share content - ranging from videos to images and sound clips - while on the go, with the transfer of video becoming increasingly widespread.
