Facebook requested to remove Scrabulous game

Thursday 17th January 2008, by Daniel King

Social networking website Facebook has been asked to remove the Scrabulous application after lawyers for Hasbro and Mattel claim that the internet game infringes copyright.

The game has proved popular with broadband and other internet users, as over 500,000 daily users log on to play, making it among the ten most popular applications on Facebook.

However, game manufacturers Hasbro and Mattell, which jointly own the Scrabble trademark, have demanded that the game be removed, prompting speculation they may be launching their own version online.

The application is an add-on created by software developers Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla. The game has already received support in the shape of the Facebook group "Save Scrabulous".

Earlier this year, Facebook's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said that it was unlikely the hugely popular site would go public in 2008, although he did suggest this could happen in two or three years time.
