Facebook's Christmas victory over Google 'sign that email is dying'

Thursday 31st December 2009, by Daniel King

An internet commentator has suggested Facebook's victory over Google during the festive period proves surfers are favouring social media over email.

A tweet on research firm Hitwise's Twitter feed on Tuesday (December 29th 2009) revealed the social networking portal was the most visited site in the US on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with the search engine in second place.

The reverse was the case in the UK - a fact the web organisation suggested could change next year.

Commenting on the data, Search Engine Journal (SEJ) contributor Arnold Zafra said web users are increasingly favouring social networking sites over email to communicate with friends and family.

The search correspondent predicted there may be an "impending battle" between the sites over the coming days as each competes to attract more web users.

Mr Zafra also expressed surprise at the result, as Facebook has generated negative publicity about its privacy settings in recent months.

He remarked: "It only goes to show that email is a thing of the past - these days, as Facebook and perhaps other social sites like Twitter are the more preferred ways of communicating online, especially during special occasions."

Set up in 2003, SEJ is an online community of internet and new media professionals which aims to share tips about best practice and discuss the latest internet news.

Earlier this year, Hitwise revealed Facebook was the most searched term of 2009.

It published a list of the top 25 words put into search engine over the last 12 months, which included Google, Yahoo, myspace, craigslist, YouTube and eBay.
