Feedback 'very important for shoppers'

Monday 10th March 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband users who shop online may find themselves influenced by the opinions of other shoppers, according to an internet magazine.

News editor of Web-User Ben Camm-Jones explained that online retailers are increasingly reliant on user-generated content as a marketing tool.

Mr Camm-Jones commented: "Any sensible retailer has got to put those features on their website because people do trust what other people say, although whether it is genuine or not is another issue."

He added that the feedback feature had been instrumental in the development of sites such as auction site eBay, popular with broadband bargain hunters.

It was recently announced by eBay that from May onwards sellers will no longer be allowed to leave negative, or even neutral, feedback about buyers to prevent retaliation from bad reviews.

The popularity of user-generated content was highlighted in a survey by Coremetrics, which showed that 58 per cent of professionals have implemented such content, or other review features, in the past year.
