Fox films for rent on broadband
(Fri, 28th December 2007)
Broadband users will soon be able to rent Fox films for a limited time by downloading them through Apple's iTunes service, according to reports this week.
The Financial Times claims that the digital rental deal will be announced by the companies soon, with the Mac world conference on January 14th a potential date.
Currently Apple sells some films through iTunes, in conjunction with studios such as Disney. This new development would see customers able to watch movies for a finite amount of time for a lower fee.
Other websites, such as showcast.com, offer films for rent to broadband users but the mass appeal of iTunes may transform the industry with Apple's Fair Play DRM protection making it legal to put Fix Films onto a video iPod.
The news comes as the Times reports a government crackdown on illegal downloading. The UK Film Council has estimated that film piracy cost the industry over £800 million in 2005 alone.
