Free Wi-Fi for Shoreditch?

Wednesday 27th August 2008, by Daniel King

Residents of Shoreditch may soon be able to get online without charge if BT carries out its plan to black the area with free Wi-Fi access.

The promotion will be limited to 1,000 La Fonera+ Wi-Fi routers, which are to be delivered to the town this summer, reports Absolute Gadget.

"This is a project to create a Free Wi-Fi area for Shoreditch, so that local businesses and residents can share their Wi-Fi with their neighbours and surf the internet for free, " says Shoreditchwifi.com.

A spokesperson for the launch said that the new routers plug into an internet box at home or at work and will be free until the nationwide product launch at the end of October.

The internet service provider stated that it hoped to have 100 per cent coverage in the area by the time of the launch.

According to OpenWiFiSpots.com, there are currently 24,647 free Wi-Fi hotspots in the US, ranging from airports, cafes, libraries, book stores and shopping malls.
