With more people taking advantage of the many broadband services available to them and the recession continuing to bite, one expert has suggested this is resulting in more entrepreneurship.
According to eBay, the online auction site which allows users to set up their own retail outlets and trade items with others from around the world, now is the perfect time for people to consider starting a business.
Vanessa Canzini, a spokesperson for the site, said the continuing adverse economic conditions have forced many to take stock of their current situation and turn to the internet as a means of boost their income.
She added there were now 122,000 businesses registered with eBay - and regardless of whether or not entrepreneurs chose to start up in this way, the idea that people were taking control of their lives by setting up a small business was a good thing.
Ms Canzini went on to say that redundancy has spurred many people on to use their broadband connections to sell and trade items online and those who were frustrated with their employers were now being given a new opportunity.
"This is the first recession where the internet has been a serious trading channel and there has never been a better time to start [trading online], particularly if you believe the reports that we are starting to see signs of recovery," she concluded.
According to eBay's second Online Business Index, an estimated 69 per cent of people conducting business using the internet are confident about the outlook for the next three months.
