Gateshead homes 'set for 100Mbps broadband'

A new housing development project in the north of England could see residents benefit from some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK.

Homes built on a brownfield site in Gateshead are to be provided with direct access to a fibre-optic network that offers download speeds of as much as 100Mbps.

The service, developed by Gateshead Technology Innovations, was originally designed to serve the nearby Baltic Business Quarter and help attract major employers to the town.

However, Gateshead council leader Mick Henry said it could easily be adapted to provide access for homeowners in the region as well as businesses.

"We believe it would be relatively simple to extend this system into neighbouring areas - and offer householders the potential to access some of the fastest and most powerful broadband in the world," he commented.

Mr Henry added that the network represents the best communications infrastructure available anywhere across the UK at present and would provide a major boost for the new housing location.

"This is an exciting new development which could completely transform housing potential in this area and turn the site into one of the most sought-after locations in the region," he said.

According to research firm Point Topic, the continued progression of broadband services is likely to mean that more than 90 per cent of homes in the UK have access to speeds of over 32Mbps by 2019.

Analysts claimed that the government's universal service commitment will help drive next-generation access over the next ten years and deliver faster speeds across the country.
