Google is officially the most used search engine in the world, according to new user figures.

Over 61 billion web searches were undertaken during the month of August, with 37 billion of those being carried out on Google, research from comScore suggests.

Of that total of 37.1 billion, 31 billion came from Google's worldwide portals, while six billion were through YouTube. Yahoo! was the second most popular search engine, with 8.5 billion searches, while Chinese language search engine Baidu was third with 3.2 billion searches.

Bob Ivins, executive vice president of international markets at comScore, said: "With the tremendous volume of search activity occurring around the world, search continues to present an abundance of marketing opportunities to companies on both a global and local scale."

Earlier this week, figures from comScore revealed that UK broadband users access more social network web pages than anywhere else in Europe.
