Google set to improve image search

Wednesday 30th April 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband searchers could find the capacity to search for pictures using Google has been improved, reports the Register.

Two researchers, affiliated with the search-engine giant, revealed a new image search method at the International World Wide Web Conference in Beijing this week.

In their paper, Shumeet Baluja and Yusi Jing wrote: "Our experiment results show significant improvement, in terms of user satisfaction and relevancy, in comparison to the most recent Google Image Search results."

The new process is based upon the PageRank system, with the ability to rank images based on relative importance, which could improve the searching process for busy broadband users as irrelevant images are excluded.

Earlier in April, the Register reported that Google was being sued by a private detective over its AdSense service.

David Almeida claimed the system was confusing, as he did not want to pay for adverts on third-party sites which he was charged for after leaving the relevant box unticked.
