Highlands secures £70 million broadband deal

Highlands secures £70 million broadband deal Schools, libraries and council buildings in the Scottish Highlands have joined the broadband revolution, spending £70 million on high speed internet links.

Some 850 sites will benefit from the Highlands and Islands Pathfinder Broadband Procurement Project, which will initially take place in schools and will be later rolled out across other government owned services.

The project is expected to take seven years in total and will also improve communications in local government and health services.

Arthur McCourt, Highland Council chief executive said: "Ensuring that local public services have access to the latest broadband technology is a vital step in modernising local government.

"It will provide a tremendous boost to modern learning and teaching practice and to the provision of services to the public."

In December, the Scottish Executive pledged £5 million to roll out broadband services across the country. Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen said broadband "would become a vital communications tool in the modern era".
