High-speed broadband for Dundee

Thursday 19th June 2008, by Daniel King

Dundee is set to become the next Fibrecity - the first in Scotland - as its sewerage network will be used to deliver super-high-speed broadband connections.

The broadband will be installed by H20, who have already undertaken similar projects in towns such as Bournemouth where residents can now take advantage of the fibre optic cable system, which allows speeds of over 100 Mps.

Chief executive officer of H2O Networks Elfed Thomas told the BBC: "Dundee is the most densely populated city in Scotland, but this project will see us bringing connectivity to more remote areas as Fibrecity is an all inclusive solution."

He added that currently many broadband customers were reliant on 20th century networks, where a new solution was needed to cope with the latest internet technologies.

Meanwhile, the deployment of fibre optic networks is set to continue around the country, as H20 Networks has said it will aim to fulfill a build programme of 600 kilometres within 18 months.
