Internet connection is an 'essential commodity'

Broadband customers could be inspired to make sure they are on the best deal after one expert described the internet as an "essential commodity".

Dan Oliver, editor of .net magazine, said the internet has proved essential for many people, especially those who have had to deal with financial institutions.

"Anyone that's had to contact a bank via the phone, or had to stand in a lengthy queue to get information on a public service, will - without exception - view their net connection as an essential commodity; and using the net as a way to deliver advice and services is only going to increase," he said.

The comments follow the publication of a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which revealed that internet connection is almost as important as earning a living.

According to the report, in non-pensioner households, a minimum income standard and access to the internet are now essential.

The study also showed that during the recession people have not reduced what they see as a necessity saying things that allow them to "participate in society" are equally as important as physical essentials like food, warmth and shelter.

Just two years ago, the internet was only deemed a necessity in households that had children of school-age.

According to Mr Oliver, this reflects the internet's emergence as a platform for consumer activity and entertainment.

"For many people, the internet is now the primary way they shop and entertain themselves," he added.
