Internet service providers feature in complaints list

More people could be considering switching their broadband service provider after a new survey found it was one of the most complained about matters in the UK during the first half of 2009.
Figures compiled by Consumer Direct, a group which is managed by the Office of Fair Trading, looked at the 414,000 registered grievances during the six months ending in June.
Although the number was down by three per cent on the same period in 2008, it was noted web providers featured among the top ten firms that caused upset to people.
However, internet services were the last entry in the chart, coming behind problems experienced by people shopping for second hand cars, mobile phones, televisions, portable hardware, auto repairs, computers, furniture and clothing.
Internet Service Providers did manage to generate over six per cent of the complaints made during the period, but this was down 16.18 per cent on the 2008 figure.
Consumer minster Kevin Brennan commented that it was important for the public to feel confident about shopping online and how their rights are affected by making purchases.
"Of course, fewer complaints are also good for businesses. That's why we are working with companies on the Know Your Consumer Rights Campaign to help them improve their knowledge of consumer rights too," he added.
Households experiencing problems with the speed of their connection or troubled by how much it is costing them could search for a package better suited to their needs online.
