Internet TV 'will become more important'

Thursday 10th July 2008, by Daniel King

The internet has the potential to become the primary source of distribution for television within five to ten years, according to an industry expert.

BBC's iPlayer and ITV.com's catch-up content have both proved popular with broadband customers and Arash Amel from research firm Screen Digest believes such services will become more important in the next few years.

He explained that internet television cannot hope to compete with traditional services at present, as the technology that would allow audiences of millions to watch big events via their PCs is not yet in place

"It's not going to always stay like that - and in the next four or five years you'll see quite significant improvements in how much simultaneous video traffic the internet can deliver," Mr Amel continued.

Once that change has taken place, he added, online platforms have the potential to begin competing with traditional formats to become the "ultimate source" for television.
