Internet users should be 'as vigilant as possible'

Friday 20th June 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband users concerned about internet security should take steps to protect their online privacy as much as possible, according to the Social Media Portal (SMP).

Co-founder and editor of SMP Tim Gibbon has spoken about the need to protect personal information when using services such as social networking sites.

Mr Gibbon explained: "Ultimately, users need to be vigilant and protect their online privacy as much as they are able, and not rely upon government or otherwise to take sole responsibility."

He added advice which could interest broadband users, such as choosing an alphanumeric password, hiding information such as date of birth and email on networking sites and generally treating online data as you would bank details.

Any broadband users looking for further advice against online fraud can find help from the Center for Democracy and Technology website and Get Safe Online.
