iPhone users 'can make cheap calls using broadband connection'

Mobile phone owners could use their handset's broadband capabilities to make cheap calls, thanks to a new application designed by Google.

The world-famous search engine has released Google Voice for the iPhone, which will allow users to contact friends and relatives for an especially small charge without being offered other services typically offered by telecommunications companies.

Apple - the producers of the iPhone - has previously rejected an appeal by Google to approve the voice technology, but this version has taken advantage of a loophole in the terms and conditions that make applications available on the iPhone online store.

The fact Google Voice can be accessed with a broadband connection via a web browser is said to be the determining factor.

Google Voice may be welcomed by many mobile users with broadband access as another useful and cost-effective function to be used.

Similar features which are often at their best when deployed thanks to a broadband connection include Skype, Facebook and Messenger.

The official Google blog emphasises the easy accessibility of the application, stating: "For quick access to the most important features like Dialer, Compose SMS, Inbox or Contacts, you can add shortcuts to your iPhone home screen or Palm Launcher - so cheap calls and messaging will be just a single click away."

Apple's iPhone could be set for a further boost in popularity after it was launched by another stockist - Vodafone - recently.

The mobile company revealed that it achieved higher sales figures on its first day than Orange did when it first released the phone for sale.
