ISPs to work with govt on universal porn block?

Monday 20th December 2010, by Daniel King

ISPs and the government are to discuss ways of installing an automatic universal block on internet pornography.

Speaking to the Sunday Times newspaper, the communications minister Ed Vaizey reported that he was keeping an "eye on the situation", ISP Review reported.

He added that some kind of solution to the issue would be devised within the next couple of years if ISPs were not prepared to address it themselves.

However, Nicholas Lansman, chairman of the Internet Service Providers Association, has spoken out and said that trying to activate such a ban would be technically and legally difficult.

Mr Lansman commented in an interview with the BBC: "ISPs currently block child abuse content which is illegal and widely regarded as abhorrent.

"Blocking lawful pornography content is less clear cut, will lead to the blocking of access to legitimate content and is only effective in preventing inadvertent access."

Some of the ISPs who have agreed to take part in the talks include BT, Virgin Media UK and Talk Talk.
