LTE technology to face a challenge

LTE technology to face a challenge Long-term evolution (LTE) base transceiver stations may face competition from other wireless broadband technologies, an expert has warned.

According to ABI Research analyst Ian Cox, the technology will need to highlight its good points if it is to surpass others and retain consumers.

"LTE faces competition from other broadband wireless technologies and it will need to demonstrate clear technical and economic advantages to convince network operators," he said.

However, the technology could benefit from Release-8 of the 3GPP standard – documents highlighting the next generation of mobile communication products.

LTE is expected to allow the creation of a market which will replace falling 3G revenues and enable users to benefit from broadband technology available through SIP-enabled (peer-to-peer) networks, Mr Cox adds.

Among the benefits of using LTE networks are fixed broadband data rates, a single internet provider for voice and data services and spectrum flexibility of between 1.25 MHz and 20 MHz at least.
