Medical advice 'available on internet'

Wednesday 21st May 2008, by Daniel King

Patients should not be afraid of using the internet to find more information about conditions or medications said David Pink, chief executive of the Long-term Conditions Alliance (LTCA).

While GP and practice nurses are excellent traditional ports of call, Mr Pink encouraged patients to do their own research and to exercise basic common sense and consult a professional if they had any doubts.

His comments come in light of a drive by the LTCA and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry to increase patient awareness and understanding of their medication or diagnosed conditions.

Mr Pink stated: "People shouldn't be afraid of looking on the internet – charities have excellent online information covering diseases and treatment from the point of view of patients rather than doctors."

In related news yesterday, search engine Google unveiled Google Health, its online personal health record which enables customers to access their health records and get health advice over the internet.
