MEP asks EU to open broadband market

A member of the European Parliament has pleaded with the European Union's competition commissioner to allow Hull's broadband market to be opened.
Diana Wallis, Liberal Democrat MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, has asked competition commissioner Nellie Kroes to talk to industry regulator Ofcom to ensure Hull's residents receive an increased level of broadband competition, the Independent reports.
Hull is currently the only region of the UK not to have a competitive broadband market. Local supplier Kingston Communications, recently rebranded as KCOM, was the only telecoms company not to be subsumed by BT in 1914. As a result, it is the only telecoms provider in the city.
Ms Wallis told the newspaper: "Businesses are effectively held to ransom, as there is only one supplier. That does not send out the right message to businesses looking to set up in the Hull area. Everybody is proud of their history and the cream-coloured phone boxes, but now it has got to the stage where people want choice and better service."
Kingston Communications was founded in 1902 and its Karoo service is the only residential broadband service in the Hull area.
