Microsoft joins Yahoo! for search

Broadband users could see the way they search the web change soon, following an announcement that two of the sectors biggest players are to work in partnership.

Yahoo! and Microsoft unveiled details of an agreement this week that it is claimed will provide surfers with an enhanced web experience, while reinventing online advertising.

The move comes just a couple of months after the latter company unveiled its latest engine, named Bing, which was designed to replace its Live Search facility.

It has been confirmed that Microsoft will now be in charge of keeping the Yahoo! crawler, while its former rival will provide an international sales support team for both of the firms' marketing options.

The deal will be based on a ten-year partnership and, although a number of services from each group will become integrated, it has been reiterated that each will keep a separate advertising business and sales force.

Chief executive officer of Yahoo! Carol Bartz said the move would be good news for broadband customers as well as those in the marketing sector.

"This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development," she added.

Earlier this month, research conducted by market analysts at Compete revealed that Microsoft's rebranded Bing search engine had increased its market share from 6.2 per cent in May to 6.5 per cent the following month. In addition, it attracted 49.57 million unique users following its launch.
