Mobile broadband use 'set to soar'

The growth of mobile broadband is set to accelerate over the next five years as more users look to access emails and surf the web on the move, research suggests.

According to a new report by Analysys Mason, the total number of mobile broadband connections across Europe will reach almost 150 million by 2014.

The firm anticipates an annual growth rate of 46 per cent over the next five years, which could see mobile services begin to outweigh cable and DSL-based connections.

Published ahead of the GSMA Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona next week, the research claimed that more customers will begin to adopt mobile broadband as a complement to their home internet services.

Matt Hatton, principal analyst and author of the report, said: "The key development in the mobile broadband market during the next five years will be the growing proportion of casual users."

He pointed out that these subscribers will have "different usage profiles" from current mobile broadband users, meaning operators will have to adapt to changing demands in order to take advantage of the trend.

"Mobile broadband provides operators with an opportunity to tap into a valuable new revenue stream – and they cannot afford to miss out," Mr Hatton added.

This comes after research published by the GSM Association suggested that the number of mobile phones connected across the world could reach six billion by 2013.

The report claimed that the increased popularity of mobile broadband would play a major part in driving the growth of the mobile communications sector, despite the economic downturn.
