Mobile broadband will expand to include banking and YouTube, says expert

As mobile broadband technology advances and becomes faster, more reliable and widely available, the range of functions it will be used for will increase, says an expert.
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association released figures recently detailing mobile broadband users' activities on their mobile devices for the first time.
They showed that social networking sites are a particular favourite, with Facebook the most-visited site of all.
Facebook - which had almost five million unique visitors during December - was followed by Twitter, BBC News and Google, amongst others.
However, Natasha Stokes, editor at Mobile Choice, believes this is about to change, with sites such as YouTube and online banking due to become the favourites of the future.
She says: "Mobile internet became mainstream largely because people wanted to access their social networks on the go. As mobile internet becomes more accessible, faster and available on a wider range of handsets, [I expect it to expand] to include banking and media such as TV and YouTube."
Interestingly, half of UK users who accessed mobile internet during December did so from a smartphone, the organisation's report revealed.
This may indicate that smartphones are the area in which the biggest mobile broadband advances must be made if complex technology - such as watching television - is to be possible.
Other figures announced announced by the association included the fact that 6.7 billion web pages were viewed on mobile broadband devices during the month, with a total of 4.8 billion minutes spent online.
The current top ten sites made up roughly 70 per cent of both the pages visited and time spent.
