More consumers switching broadband

A new report has revealed that the number of Britons switching their broadband provider rose by five per cent in 2006 compared with the previous year.
The publication from telecoms regulator Ofcom also suggested that British consumers are benefiting from increased choice in the broadband market, with three in five able to pick a provider from at least four options.
Over ten million Britons use telecoms and broadband services provided by a non-BT firm, while the average cost of broadband dropped by two-thirds between 2005 and 2006.
"The UK now has one of the most competitive markets anywhere in the world," commented Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.
Ofcom's findings were published as part of its annual report into the compliance of BT with the resolutions the two organisations agreed in 2005.
Recent statistics from European research body Eurostat found that 57 per cent of UK households currently access the internet over a broadband connection.
