More mobile broadband users watching TV, says Motorola

Leading telecommunications firm Motorola has uncovered some growing trends regarding the habits of mobile broadband customers.

A study of 3,500 Europeans revealed that 87 per cent of people now share content - such as videos, images and sound clips - with friends and family via devices while on the move.

The research also suggests that mobile broadband is increasingly being used to allow people to watch television.

Some 52 per cent of internet users are now streaming videos and 34 per cent are watching television online - with many of those likely to be mobile broadband customers using their latest laptop, netbook or handset for entertainment.

Steve McCaffery, vice-president of Motorola Home and Networks Mobility, said: "The internet, social networks and smartphones have changed how consumers of all ages engage with content. It's now on their terms.

"What this tells us as an industry is that we must continue to develop solutions and services that make the consumer experience as intuitive, individual and interactive as possible."

Demand for mobile broadband could be particularly high in Sweden, where more of those questioned by Motorola said they prefer to watch video content online rather than on television.

Providers of technology which supports mobile broadband may wish to take into account two other results of the poll.

Firstly, more than half of people would like products which customise the viewing experience and secondly, that many users would like to use a mobile broadband connection to alert friends of upcoming television shows they may like.

People seeking certain mobile broadband specifications to suit them may wish to take the advice of Mobile Computing News, which last week suggested there is a provider to suit everybody.
