More than half of non-web mobile users 'would like internet access'

There is still plenty of potential for growth of the mobile internet market, after research revealed that more than three-quarters of Britons still do not use their handset to browse the web.

A survey of more than 2,000 consumers by Essential Research found 76 per cent do not access the internet on the go, according to New Media Age.

It also concluded that 60 per cent claim not to have a phone which offers mobile internet access, while 30 per cent are not even interested in one.

However, 56 per cent of mobile phone owners who do not go online vowed they would be interested in securing technology that allows them to - which may suggest to mobile broadband providers that there is plenty of room for expansion within the industry.

Alex Charlton, a partner at Essential Research, tells New Media Age: "What struck us most was how few people were engaging in the mobile internet outside the London media bubble. The barriers the average person faces are manifold and the benefits far from clear."

Essential Research uncovered social networking on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, travel updates and the receiving of vouchers as the most common reasons behind mobile internet use.

With the popularity of social networking sites soaring, more and more people could soon turn to mobile internet functions as a way of keeping up to date with their friends and colleagues.

People interested in the latest news and travel updates on their iPhone may wish to download Sky's news service application, which has racked up sales of more than one million, it was announced last week.
